"The Girl Who Played with Fire" by Stieg Larsson [Review]

The Girl Who Played with Fire (Millennium, #2)The Girl Who Played with Fire by Stieg Larsson
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist is back, this time in pursuit of a ring of human traffickers who are forcing women into prostitution. An idealistic reporter approaches his magazine "Millennium" with a killer story. He and his girlfriend are planning to release a report on the sex crimes industry in Sweden. Not only will the report detail the horror of these crimes, it will also expose the identities of police officers, judges, and politicians involved. It will also discuss a mysterious figure known only as "Zala" who is the mastermind behind the operation. "Millennium" plans to publish an issue dedicated to it, as well as publish a book that will out the names. But before the book can be published, the authors are brutally murdered, and Salander is accused of the crime. The police are hunting her while Blomkvist tries to find the truth and clear her name.

My "Dragon Tattoo" Parody Just Got Two Horrible Reviews

From the Department of Putting Your Money Where Your Mouth Is...

In my job, we have to get surveys from customers, and I've learned there are three kinds of people. One, people who had a great experience, which motivates them to leave a survey as a reward. Two, people who had a bad experience, which motivates them to leave a survey as punishment. Three, people who had a mediocre experience, so they don't feel like leaving a survey at all. I feel the same applies to book reviews.

"The Girl Who Played With the Dragon Tattoo's Nest" is Free and Finished

My parody of Dragon TattooThe Girl Who Played With the Dragon Tattoo's Nest, is finished. It actually ended up a full novella, covering the entire length of the novel. I might expand and publish it as an ebook later on, but you can enjoy it in all its Swedish glory at Wattpad right now for free.

And there's still time before February 15 to pre-order my next novel Seizure for only 99 cents.

Read "The Girl Who Played With the Dragon Tattoo's Nest" For Free

I recently re-read The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo, and while I enjoyed it, it does have its quirks. Like a lot of Swedish street names. And sandwiches. And the Mary Sue-like main character. And the hacking, which is (while more accurate than most fictional hacking) kind of ridiculous. And did I mention that it's Swedish? Because the author does, a lot. I actually became a little obsessed with the book in my head, running over all the weird things in it.

Anyway, just for fun, I started writing a parody of it that I call The Girl Who Played With the Dragon Tattoo's Nest. It was just supposed to be a quick 6000-word thing, but I've already passed that mark, and it's still going. It may end up being an actual thing instead of just a quick gag. I'm working on it for fun in-between projects, so I don't know when or even if I'll ever finish it. But you can read my progress on Wattpad for free. Let me know what you think.

And if you want to read a much shorter but undoubtedly funnier parody of Dragon Tattoo, check out Nora Ephron's short story, "The Girl Who Fixed the Umlaut."
