100-Word Sci-Fi: "Dark Motives"

Every Saturday, I write a 100-word story based on a random word. Today's word is "shadow."

Dark Motives
By Nigel G. Mitchell

"The killer," said Sir Reginald Lawton, "is in this very room."

Lightning flashed outside the manor's window. The other men and women in the drawing room exchanged cautious glances.

Lady Davenport frowned. "Where?"

Lawton took out his pipe and smiled. "Right behind me."

He reached into his shadow on the wall, and dragged a squealing black creature out into the firelight. He smashed it against the floor before hurling it into the fireplace.

As the flames reduced the creature to ash, Lawton gestured to the others with his pipe. "You all might to kill the Shadows behind you as well."
